Gao Rong named her solo exhibition “Weaving as a Thread”, showcasing recent her four series of works, including: “Level 1/2, Unit 8 Building 5 Hua Jia Di Bei Li” (2010), “Station” (2011), “Call” (2012), and “Guangzhou Station” (2012). “Weaving as a Thread” visually clarifies that these works were made by the use of thread and a traditional embroidery technique. Her works are the perfect combination of traditional craftsmanship and a contemporary concept. The artist chose embroidery as her approach to art, which was not only beyond the traditional function of embroidery decoration, but also offered as a reference to define the tradition again. The concept of Gao Rong’s works originated from her personal experiences of life, but didn’t rigidly adhere to herself; originated from reality, but her creations were beyond reality; creating a visual experience for the audience that is between the real and virtual, tough and soft, and details and the whole. I have to say that Chinese society is now in urgent need of artists of conscience like Gao Rong, as well as her works.
