A set of paintings in “the FEATHER-LIKE series” with some others in “the FRANGRANCE series”, “the BETWEEN series” and “the SILK PICTURE series” exhibited on “FEATHER-LIKE–solo exhibition for Xu Hualing” present the relatively complete thread of Xu Hualing’s thoughts in creations since 2010. Among these series, “the FEATHER-LIKE series” is the latest one she created. Paintings in this series are the continuation of the girl theme which the painter is consistent in. The only difference is that: the view of a female’s back with a sense of suspension in a large painting seems to imply Xu Hualing’s regression to “image creating” after her exploration of “visual structure”. Seemingly, the regression of “FEATHER-LIKE” is a reverse effort made by the painter against the “production of meaning” in the contemporary art. Actually, it also constitutes a new attitude towards the contemporary art: to give up the philosophized representation of meaning, to turn to the sensual temperature of the picture itself, and accordingly to rebuild the experience relationship between paintings and painters. Maybe, this is just the intrinsic meaning of the words “lift a weight as if it were a feather” that “FEATHER-LIKE” implies.
