Being among the first batch of key art museums in China, CAFA Art Museum (Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts) upholds the concept of “being inclusive, embracing the past and opening up the future.” It is committed to the construction of contemporary cultural space for the public with its distinctive collection system, further to establish a unique narrative of art history.

Over its centennial history since its founding in 1918 (originated from the Beiping Art School), CAFA and its art museum have consistently conducted collection activities in a systematical way. Currently, CAFAM houses over 20,000 artworks spanning ancient and modern periods, encompassing both Chinese and Western art. The collection includes diversified artworks by renowned masters, constituting respective sequences of “Ancient Chinese Art,” “Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art,” “Selected Works by CAFA Faculty Members and Alumni.” The recent launch of such a long-term exhibition highlights classic collection of “Modern Chinese Art”, providing a rare opportunity to review the history of modern Chinese art.

It is a pivotal period that CAFA has actively participated in the development of Chinese art throughout the 20th century. The faculty members and alumni of CAFA have made significant contributions to modern Chinese art history with their prolific output. Therefore, the exhibition does not only serve as an academic exploration to revitalize its collection, but it also provides rich cultural and historical perspectives to society, along with valuable resources and core values for art research and education.

With a total of over 260 artworks featuring Chinese art in the 20th century, the exhibition is organized chronologically into three sections: 1900-1949, 1950-1976, and 1977-2000. These reflect century-long memories, encapsulating emotions of active artists and essence of the past century.
For the first time, CAFA Art Museum presents the hoard of its collection which jointly reflects a visual history in the 20th century, encouraging visitors to experience artistic pursuits, research and zeitgeist that vividly depicted in these artworks.
